Inspection:
                                BEFORE YOU BUY

When you think you've found the right place, have an experienced log repair contractor inspect it with you.  Some contractors will not charge for this, if you're local (say within 30 miles or so,I will help you out for a cup of coffee). Even if this does cost a bit now it can easily save you many thousands later!

                               Already own it?

Conduct an inspection of your building every year, look for any of the following.

Gutters....................Need to be present and functioning!!!

Caulking.................Should be flexible, adhered to the wood, no cracks.

Finish.....................Regardless of the type, it should repel water, not have   sun scald, no cracks or flaking, it should not rub off with your hand.

General Log condition

Insect holes with fresh dust or wood fibers around them

Evidence of woodpeckers, nesting birds, squirrels, etc.

               Upward facing check lines

Soft or punky areas of wood

Moss or lichen growing on logs

Items stored against building..........there should be none

Shrubs growing near building..........should be several feet away.
